The Rickles Family Favorites:  If you enjoy a nice mix of exuberant outdoor fun and indoor relaxation you may appreciate the following list of personal favorites for the Rickles family.  I have also included sites that I would personally peruse if moving to Huntsville concerning the general area, schools, and crime.  Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list!   You should continue your search beyond these recommendations to find all the information that meets your particular needs.  However, this list will give you one native’s point of view concerning the area I’ve always called home.

Outdoors

Monte Sano State Park – Dirt walking trails, biking trails (trail bike), picnic areas, campsites

Burritt on the Mountain – Beautiful.  Historic.  Interesting.  Educational.

Big Spring Park – Nice place to walk around.  Frequent concerts-in-the-park, Christmas festivities, free movie nights and Panoply of the Arts.

Lucky Duck Scavenger Hunt - Fun in downtown!  Take your own bike or rent one from the Zagster Bike Share program ($3/hr) and follow the clues leading you around downtown Huntsville looking for metal ducks strategically hidden at prominent locations.  This is especially fun with a partner.  Takes less than 2 hours to find them all and really enjoy seeing downtown Huntsville.  You may work up a good appetite, so, enjoy my favorite downtown restaurants while you're there - Pane e Vino or Sam and Greg's.

Downtown Huntsville Events - Food Truck events and other family fun activities throughout the year.

Hayes Nature Preserve – Black-top paved walking / bike-riding trails on or around golf course and rivers.  7 mile, 10 mile or longer bike rides on controlled black-top pavement with beautiful scenery.

Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll – Might sound morbid, but, my wife and I thought it was GREAT!  Happens once per year.

Spirit of Christmas Past Historic District Homes Tour – Obviously only at Christmas, but we love it!

Bridge Street Town Centre - Great place to walk around and enjoy the ambiance of an outdoor shopping center.  Monaco theatre, Red Robin (gluten-free hamburger buns) and P.F. Changs are my favorite places to enjoy at Bridge Street.

Indoors

Madison Square Luxury Cinemas - Big, nice, reserved seating, yet the theatre is quaint and as classy as a theatre can be with free lemon water in the lobby and free mouthwash in the bathrooms.  It's a great alternative to the national chains.

Monaco Movie Theatre
– Reserved seating at outdoor mall

Valley Bend 18 Theatre - Not reserved seating.  In Bailey Cove.

Carmike Theatre
– $1.50 theatre in Monrovia

US Space and Rocket Center

Von Braun Center – Largest arena and concert hall in Huntsville where big-name music artists will perform.

Atmosphere Restaurant

Pane e Vino – Eating outdoors on the patio overlooking Big Spring Park and walking around in the park before or after.

Grandmother’s House Restaurant – Home cooking literally in someone’s grandmother’s house in Owens Cross Roads, AL.  Nice experience.

Sam & Greg’s Pizza on the Square – Great pizza on the square downtown with option to eat outside.
